The Wise and Foolish Bridesmaids

Updated: Nov 29, 2025

Did you know...

Jesus reminds us that we should be ready to meet Him at any time.

This story is about some wise and foolish bridesmaids.

In Bible times, bridesmaids would wait for the groom to bring his bride back to his father’s house.  The exact time when this happened was not known and might have taken place at night.  For this reason the bridesmaids carried oil lamps.

Jesus was teaching His disciples about the kingdom of heaven and said:

“At that time, the kingdom of heaven will be like ten bridesmaids who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.

Five of the bridesmaids were foolish, and five were wise.

The five wise bridesmaids brought extra oil for their lamps in case the bridegroom took a long time to arrive.

The five foolish had not brought extra oil.

It became night and the bridegroom had not yet arrived.  All ten bridesmaids became drowsy and fell asleep.  The oil in their lamps was getting lower and lower.

Suddenly, there was a shout.  “Here’s the bridegroom!  Come out to meet him!”

Then all the bridesmaids woke up.  The five foolish bridesmaids looked at their lamps.  The lamps had gone out and they had no more oil.  They said to the wise, “Give us some of your oil.”

“No,” the five wise bridesmaids replied.  “There won’t be enough for you and for us.  Go instead to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.”

So the foolish bridesmaids went away looking to buy oil, but while they were gone, the bridegroom arrived.

The wise bridesmaids lit their lamps with the extra oil they had brought and followed the bride and groom to arrive at the wedding celebrations.

The door was shut behind them.

When the five foolish bridesmaids returned, they found the door closed.  They pleaded, “Lord, Lord, open the door for us!”  “Truly I tell you, I don’t know you,” came the reply and they were not allowed in.

Jesus told this parable to remind  us to be wise and be ready for when He returns.

Neitsid Lampidega

“Issand, ava meile uks.”
