This story is about the importance of giving. If you were to give away a toy to a friend, it’s easy to give a broken toy, but much harder to give one that you love.
After Adam and Eve were driven out from the Garden of Eden, they had two sons named Cain and Abel.
When they grew up, Abel became a shepherd, and raised sheep. Cain was a farmer, and tended the fields.
One day it came to pass that Cain brought God an offering of some of his harvest. As his offering, Abel brought the best of his lambs from his flock.
God was pleased with Abel and accepted his offering, but He was not content with Cain’s. This made Cain very angry and feel dejected.
“Why are you so angry?” God asked him. “Why do you look so sad? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, then watch out. Sin is waiting to attack and destroy you, but you must rule over it.”
Cain was jealous of his brother.
He suggested to him that they go for a walk into the fields. When they were there, Cain rose up against his brother and killed him.
God called to Cain, “Where is your brother? Where is Abel?”
“I don’t know,” answered Cain. “Am I supposed to keep track of him wherever he goes? Am I my brother’s keeper?”
God asked Cain, “What have you done? Listen, your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground!”
God banished Cain from the ground he had defiled with his brother’s blood. He told Cain, “No longer will the ground yield its abundant crops for you, no matter how hard you work. From now on, you will be a homeless fugitive on the earth, constantly wandering from place to place.”
Fearing that others, upon seeing him, would want to kill Cain as retribution for his evil deed, Cain asks God to spare him. Cain said to God, “My punishment is too great for me to bear! You have banished me from my land and from Your presence. You have made me a wandering fugitive. All who see me will try to kill me!”
God answered, “They will not kill you, for I will give seven times your punishment to anyone who does.”
Then God put a mark on Cain to warn anyone who might try to kill him.
Cain left God’s presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
